Trinity Language Requirements

The foreign language requirement may be met in different ways, depending upon the level at which students begin the study of the language in question. All students who place at the 100 level or above in a specific language may take any course taught in that language that bears the FL designation to fulfill the language requirement. Such courses include literature, film, linguistics, and culture.

Students who place into the second semester of the intermediate level will take two courses in the same language to complete the language requirement, while students who begin their language study at Duke at the elementary level can fulfill the foreign language requirement in that language by completing three courses coded FL.

Courses completed in order to fulfill the foreign language requirement must all be taken in the same language.

For more information, see General Education Requirements in Trinity College's Academic Policies and Procedures.
